While the primary goal of medicine is to preserve life, it may not always be possible. Accepting this is a difficult process for patients, their families and the doctors involved. Dying patients deserve to be treated with respect and dignity as well as being involved in the decision making surrounding their treatment options.
This session will explore how doctors can ensure patients are provided with the best possible treatment options whilst maintaining appropriate clinical care and meeting legal obligations.
| Content: | • Deciding what treatment options are appropriate in different circumstances • Making the decision to cease treatment • Communication with the patient and family • Understanding the wishes of the patient and family • Medico legal requirements |
