Disinfection and sterilisation for medical practices and clinics (for practice staff)

Staff responsible for reprocessing reusable medical devices

Infection control polices and procedures should be in place to minimise or prevent the spread of infection and diseases in your practice. You must be aware of current standards of practice if you are in contact with patients or are responsible for reprocessing reusable medical devices.

In this session you will learn about transmission of infection, standard precautions, Standard AS/NZS 4815 and its compliance requirements for cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation, storage and handling of sterile items and stock. You will be provided with strategies that will make a difference to your work practices and processes.

Terry has over 15 years experience as an independent Consultant in her own business, STEAM Consulting. In this capacity, she has worked as an infection control and sterilisation auditor for the Victorian Department of Human Services, conducted training for a wide variety of personnel involved in reprocessing of reusable instruments, undertaken consultancy reviews of hospital based sterilising services, day surgery centres, office-based practices and provided training and consultancy advice to the medical industry.

Terry provides consultancy advice on health facility planning projects and is frequently asked to make recommendations for structural changes, logistics and work flow improvements as part of sterilising services reviews.

She has represented the Australian Infection Control Association on the Australian Standards Committee responsible for AS/NZS 4187 and AS/NZS 4815 relating to the reprocessing of reusable medical devices for over 12 years. Terry is also regularly invited to speak on a range of sterilisation and infection control topics at various State, National and International conferences.
